Elkhart County
Elkhart County is located in extreme north-central Indiana, bordered on the north by Michigan, on the east by Lagrange County, to the southeast by Noble County, to the south by Kosciusko County, to the southwest by Marshall County, and to the west by St Joseph County.
It has an area of 464 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 182,791 residents.
Elkhart (2000 Census population of 51,874) is the largest city in Elkhart County, while Goshen (29,383) is the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Nappanee (6,710), Middlebury (2,956), Wakarusa (1,618), Bristol (1,382), and Millersburg (868).
The county was named for the Elkhart River. The river's name in turn may have come from that of a local Native American leader.
