Born: October 14, 1910
Birthplace: Martinsville [Morgan County]
Died:

Wooden was a three-year All-State basketball player at Martinsville High School, leading the Artesians to three state championship appearances, winning in 1927. At Purdue he was a three-time All American and led the Boilermakers to the National Championship in 1932. He coached for eleven years at South Bend Central High School, leading the team to a 218-42 record. Following service in the Second World War, Wooden coached briefly at Indiana State Teacher's College, where he declined an invitation to a national tournament that banned African-American players. Wooden was named head coach at UCLA in 1948. He never had a losing season at UCLA and went on to coach the Bruins to ten national titles. His UCLA team won seven championships in row, 1967-1973, and 10 national championship in the twelve year stretch between 1964 and 1975. Wooden is only one of two individuals to make the Basketball Hall of Fame as both player and coach.
