Thomas Marshall

Born: March 14, 1854
Birthplace: North Manchester, Indiana [Wabash County]
Died: June 1, 1925

First of two Vice Presidents born in Indiana, serving for eight years under Woodrow Wilson. Thomas Marshall was born in North Manchester, but grew up in several midwestern states. He graduated from Wabash College in 1873 and subsequently took up law. He was elected the 27th Governor of Indiana, holding office from 1909 to 1913. His major accomplishment as Governor was passage of a Child Labor Law. Marshall ran on the Democratic ticket with Woodrow Wilson in 1912, and was elected Vice President, serving throughout Wilson's two terms. When Wilson suffered a stroke in October 1919, some thought his condition so deteriorated that Marshall should have assumed the Presidency. However, Wilson survived and at the end of his second term in 1921 Marshall returned to Indianapolis and joined a legal firm. Marshall was well known for his wit and is perhaps most famous for his statement, during a Senate debate, that "What this country needs is a really good five-cent cigar".
