George Ade

Born: February 9, 1866
Birthplace: Kentland, Indiana
Died: May 16, 1944

Playwright and humorist. Ade got his start as a newspaper columnist. His first book, Fables in Slang, was a bestseller that recast old stories in modern language. He also enjoyed tremendous success as a playwright, once having three plays in production on Broadway at the same time. In 1904, Ade built an estate called Hazelden just east of the town of Brook, in Newton County. Well-known figures of the day, including at least two presidents, were visitors.
