Outdoors: Yellowwood State Forest

Yellowwood State Forest

lake yellowwood Yellowwood State Forest comprises more than 23,000 acres in Brown County. The forest is named for the yellowwood tree, which is unusual in the area. Yellowwood offers hiking and horse trails, primitive camping, a shelter house, and three fishing lakes. The largest of these lakes, Yellowwood Lake, is 133 acres and occupies a central place in the forest. Boat rentals are available seasonally at Yellowwood Lake, and the forest office and visitor center is located adjacent to the lake. The Jackson Creek Trail loops north from the northern end of the lake. Along with Morgan-Monroe State Forest, Yellowwood can be a good fall-foliage viewing alternative to the crowded Brown County State Park.

The forest can be reached by travelling along IN 46 between Bloomington and Nashville. Signs will direct you to turn north onto Jackson Creek Road, which will lead, with much twisting and turning, to the forest proper. It is also possible to approach from the north by following signs off IN 45, but these roads can be a bit rough, especially after heavy rains.
