Outdoors: Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve

Trail Click to Enlarge Introduction Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve protects a boreal flatwoods that is home to several species relatively rare in Indiana, though more common to the north. Paper birch is here, as are Canada mayflower (in spring) and wintergreen, a low evergreen plant that produces one or two red berries late in the year. Many fern and amphibian species are present. Mosquitoes are generally horrific, and there is usually freeway noise, but the woods are well worth a visit. Trails Exuberant briars and other vegetation can obscure the entrance to the lollipop trail; look for the sign along the road and expect that access may require some work. An excellent trail brochure describes features found at numbered posts, though the posts may or may not be present. Puncheons cross the wettest areas, but there are other opportunities for the incautious to experience soggy feet and muddy shoes. Facilities None. Directions View Larger Map LaPorte County.
