Outdoors: Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve
Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve is in northern LaPorte County, not far from the Michigan line. The preserve is owned by the LaPorte County Conservation Trust. An overgrown path leads from the county road into the preserve; once it gets past the briars and growth next to the road the path opens up somewhat. You'll soon encounter a post with a box on it; inside are trail brochures. The trail loops, passing through very wet terrain full of shallow ponds, ferns, and birch trees. Puncheons pass over the wetter areas, but soggy feet are a definite possibility, and vicious mosquitoes are a near certainty. This is about as far north as you can go in Indiana and the flora is somewhat reminiscent of what you might see in parts of Michigan or Wisconsin. I look forward to a return visit. How to get there: From the intersection of IN 39 and US 20 in LaPorte, north 4 miles on IN 39, then left on 925N for 1.75. The preserve will be on your right. Some sources indicate that there is a parking lot, but I was unable to find one. Park along the road near the sign. GPS Coordinates: (Entrance) N 41 44.459 W 86 46.077 DeLorme 19:A12 |
