Outdoors: Whitewater Memorial State Park

Reservoir Click to Enlarge Trail 4 Click to Enlarge Introduction Whitewater Memorial State Park includes two reservoirs; associated aquatic activities get most of the attention. However, threare also trails. There is an entrance fee. Trails Trail 4 is the best of the lot; it’s an out-and-back of approximately three miles that heads toward, and then shadows, the western edge of Whitewater Lake. In the process, it traverses part of the Hornbeam Nature Preserve. American hornbeam and eastern hop-hornbeam (ironwood) trees, both members of the birch family, are abundant inside the preserve; the woods beyond the preserve boundaries are less exceptional. Alas, the propensity of sound to carry well over water can be very evident here. If the beach on the far side of the lake is busy, and the wind is from the east, you can expect lots of noise. You may have better luck early in the morning or just before dark, or during the cooler months. The trail ends at an observation platform set back somewhat from the lake.
