White Oak Nature Preserve is named after the predominant tree of the preserve. Of course, other species are present as well, and several are detailed in the trail brochure that describes notable features at numbered stations along the 0.9 mile trail.
Of special interest is the Virginia Pine, which is native in this area of the state. The path is a well-defined loop that climbs and descends numerous small ridges and crosses several small wooden footbridges. A pleasant walk, though be prepared for biting insects in the warmer months.
Noise from nearby I-65 is always present, and some of the markers and/or their subjects appear to be missing. On the plus side, I noted little poison ivy during my visit.
Getting There:
The preserve lies within Clark State Forest. To get to the forest, use I-65 Exit 19 and follow the signs. You'll head east to Henryville on IN 160, then turn left (north) at the intersection with US 31. Nearly a mile north you'll turn left (west) into the forest. Follow the main forest road west until it crosses back over I-65. Park at the shelter house on your right and cross the main forest road towards the nature preserve sign. The trail starts next to the sign.
