Outdoors: Turkey Run State Park Turkey Run State Park
Turkey Run State Park can almost be thought of as two parks in one. The area south of Sugar Creek is much like many other parks in the State - swimming pool, Inn, nature center, shelter houses, campground - all the amenities one expects to find in an established State Park. But cross Sugar Creek on the suspension foot bridge, and you enter a whole different experience - mile after mile of some of the most rugged hiking in the Indiana State Park System. This is not like climbing in the Rocky Mountains or the Sierras, but by Indiana standards it's pretty special. Some of the trails follow intermittent stream beds and they can be slick if water is present. Be sure to visit the "Punch Bowl", on Trail #4.The park is cut more or less in half by Sugar Creek, which flows east to west. It is a favorite with canoeists during the summer months. You can rent a canoe from a local livery that will take you and your canoe to drop off points and pick you up later when you're done. You can choose from several different trip lengths. The creek boundaries of the park are marked by two covered bridges, the Narrows Bridge on the east, and the Cox Ford Bridge on the west. This part of Indiana has most of the remaining covered bridges in the state, and when your legs are worn out from hiking the trails you might want to do an auto tour of the local bridges. If you still haven't had enough, Shades State Park is just a few miles to the east and well worth visiting. Facilities: Inn with restaurant, cabins. Campground with flush toilets, hot water. Nature Center. Shelter houses, picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts. Horseback riding. Hiking and fishing. How to get there: From the intersection of US 41 and Indiana 47, two miles east on Indiana 47 to the entrance on the left. From Crawfordsville, west on Indiana 47 to Waveland, then seven miles further to the entrance on the right.
