Outdoors: Tribbett's Flatwoods Nature Preserve

Woods Click to Enlarge Woods Click to Enlarge Introduction Tribbett's Flatwoods Nature Preserve protects an old growth woods with very large oak and beech trees; some are more than 150 feet tall. There are no official trails – only deer paths – but the understory is reasonably open. Ferns, poison ivy and pawpaw are common on the forest floor, as are large dark patches of seasonally wet, sticky, bare soil. Larger trees often look as if they are perched on small low “islands”, a foot or so above the surrounding ground. Once the leaves are out, the interior can be rather dark, and sounds are usually limited to those of birds, insects, and the trees moving in the wind. The lack of nearby activity makes this a very peaceful destination. Trails None. Facilities None. Directions View Larger Map Jennings County.
