Outdoors: Summit Lake State Park

Summit Lake State Park

bathhouse and beach Summit Lake State Park is a relatively new addition to the state park system, becoming the 19th state park in January 1988. The principal feature of the park's 2,680 acres is 800 acre Summit Lake, which was created by damming the Big Blue River. Boating, fishing, swimming and sunbathing are among the most popular activities in the park. The general appearance of the park suggests that much of it was recently used for farming - there are many open areas which are slowly beginning to grow up with woody vegetation. Although Summit Lake lacks the deep woods found in many of our other state parks, there are several smaller areas which have been forested for some time. This mix of habitats, with deep water, shoreline, fields, scrubby areas and woods means that many different species are likely to find a place to live in the park. The woods just to the east of the beach house have a good variety of wildflowers in the spring, and one of the three easy to moderate hiking trails (ranging from 0.5 to 2 miles in length) passes through these woods. The northeastern portion of the park, on the northeastern and southeastern corners of 750N and 500E, is designated as a nature area. These areas are frequented by migrating ducks and geese during the spring and fall, often in large numbers.

Facilities:

Swimming beach with bathhouse and concessions in season (generally the Saturday before Memorial day through no later than Labor Day). Campground with hot showers and flush toilets. Hiking on three trails totalling nearly four miles. Boat ramps. Boat rental (canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats) by the day or hour. Fishing. Picnic areas and shelters.

How to get there:

Summit Lake State Park is located in Henry County, approximately between New Castle and Muncie. The entrance is located off US 36, about 3.5 miles east of the intersection of Indiana 3 and US 36.
