Outdoors: Pokagon State Park Pokagon State Park
Pokagon State Park is located in Steuben County, not far from Angola in far northeastern Indiana. Pokagon State Park was established in 1925 and comprises about 1,200 acres. The park is partially bounded by Lake James and Snow Lake. There is a large inn at the park (left) with an indoor pool, playground, tennis courts, boat rental, and swimming area. Campgrounds, shelterhouses, bath house, beach, and cabins are also on the property. A refrigerated toboggan run is open from Thanksgiving through February. The excellent nature center has a number of live specimens of local fauna on display. This area of the state has many wetlands, and consequently has a high diversity of reptile and amphibian species.Seven nature trails wind through the park. Trails 3 and 6 are of particular interest as they pass through the Potawatomi Nature Preserve. The preserve is an excellent example of the post-glacial landscape. The preserve's Lake Lonidaw is a kettle hole lake approximately 35 feet deep. The lake was left behind when a gigantic, partially buried chunk of ice melted after the last glaciers receded. Tamarack trees occur here, as do May Apple, skunk cabbage, horsetails and the spectacular orchid Yellow lady's slipper. Steuben County and nearby Lagrange and Noble counties are dotted with nature preserves to explore. Thus, Pokagon State Park is not only a wonderful destination in and of itself - it is also an excellent base for exploration of the surrounding area. Facilities: Inn with indoor swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool; dining. Cabins. Campground with hot showers and flush toilets. Group Camping. Toboggan run open weekends from Thanksgiving through February. Other winter sports in season. Hiking on seven trails totalling ten miles. Swimming and bathhouse in season (generally the Saturday before Memorial day through no later than Labor Day). Boat Rental and Concessions. Fishing. Nature Center and Interpretive Naturalist Service. Picnic areas. Saddle horses with two mile bridle trail. How to get there: Pokagon State Park is easily reached from exit 154 of I-69.
