Introduction

Ober Savanna Nature Preserve is probably my favorite savanna preserve. After parking in the minuscule parking area, head north along a small footpath into the preserve interior.

As with many savannas, it is usually easy to get around in the open understory beneath the oaks. There are various grasses and many species of wildflowers, which in turn attract butterflies.

The whorled leaves and purple flower stalks of lupines are common here and put on an excellent show in season. After ripening, the black seed pods rattle in the wind or when brushed by passers-by.

A very busy high speed train track bisects the preserve, so be careful when crossing over to explore the northern portion. There is little poison ivy and biting insects are usually tolerable.

Trails

An informal footpath extends a brief distance to the north from the parking pull-off.
