Introduction

Mounds State Park preserves several earthworks created by Native Americans about two centuries before Christ; the Great Mound, nearly a quarter mile around, is a must-see.

Trails

From the large parking area just past the entrance, take the Trail 2 boardwalk south to its intersection with Trail 1. Follow Trail 1 west past the Great Mound and continue downhill toward the White River.

From here, head upstream along the river, returning when you’re ready along any of several trails that branch off to the east. The upland portions of Trail 1 are good for spring wildflowers, while Trail 3 explores small valleys and ridges between the river and the main park road.

I suggest avoiding Trail 5 along IN 232, and minimizing your exposure to crowds by staying away from the pool and campground, both in the northern end of the park.

Facilities

Camping, nature center, toilets, water.
