Outdoors: McCormick's Creek State Park

McCormick's Creek State Park

mccormick's creek photo McCormick's Creek State Park is located in Owen County, just east of Spencer in southcentral Indiana. McCormick's Creek State Park was dedicated in 1916, and is therefore Indiana's oldest state park. Over the ages, McCormick's Creek has cut a canyon through the surrounding landscape, and this canyon is one of the most attractive features of the park. The extensive facilities include an Inn, campground, nature center, pool, numerous shelterhouses and a network of nine trails.

The trails range in length from 0.6 to 3 miles, and in difficulty from "easy" to "rugged". The trail system is centered around the creek and canyon, but various loops can take the more ambitious to less-visited areas of the park. Trail 5 (3 miles) passes through the Wolf Cave Nature Preserve. The preserve is named for a 60-yard cave that visitors are invited to pass through. Bring a flashlight!

McCormick's Creek is a good place for viewing wildflowers and ferns. Some of the more common species noted here include Hepatica, May Apple, Wild Ginger, and Rattlesnake Fern. Of special interest are the Bulblet Ferns found along the canyon walls. During the spring and early summer months, the canyon resounds with the calls of nesting birds such as the Northern Parula and Yellow-throated warblers.

How to get there:

From the intersection of IN 67/US 231 and IN 46 in Spencer, turn east on IN 46. The park entrance will be on the north side of IN 46 about 2 miles east of Spencer.
