Outdoors: Loon Lake Nature Preserve

Loon Lake Click to Enlarge Introduction Loon Lake Nature Preserve is a DNR property of about 100 acres. Though you may not see them, the lake and surrounding territory are home to many species of rare plants, including tamarack, pitcher plant, and purple bladderwort. Park next to the prominent sign and enter the preserve. Trails There is a woodland trail with a side branch that affords views of Loon Lake. Soon a branch to the right offers a short woodland stroll through large May apple patches before looping back to the main trail. At this point, a left returns you to your vehicle; continuing straight starts you on an out-and-back trail. The trail ends at a small boardwalk that extends a few feet toward Loon Lake, where you can view marshy areas full of cattails, iris, and sensitive fern. Facilities None.
