Introduction
The Little Calumet River Trail is located within the Bailley Homestead / Chellberg Farm complex of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Trails
Head west from the parking area into Mnoké Prairie, a 120-acre restoration work in progress. Goldenrod and Queen Anne’s lace seem to dominate in late summer, but other plants of open spaces appear here and there.
Eventually the trail descends through woods and approaches, then crosses, the Little Calumet River and associated low areas. An extensive boardwalk allows close inspection of the wetlands; cardinal flower occurs here.
Though I generally prefer to turn back at this point, the trail does continue north, looping around the Environmental Learning Center before turning east, crossing Howe Road, and connecting to the Bailly Homestead / Chellberg Farm trail system.
Facilities
Restrooms at the nearby Bailly/Chellberg Visitor Center.
