Outdoors: Fall Creek Gorge Fall Creek Gorge
Fall Creek Gorge Nature Preserve is a Nature Conservancy property in Warren County, not far from the town of Williamsport. Over many centuries, the rushing torrent has carved and gouged numerous smaller channels and potholes into the underlying bedrock. These formations are the reason the preserve is sometimes referred to as The Potholes.
A footpath leads directly from the parking lot into some woods, crossing a small stream before climbing a short stair. You can continue up onto a ridge that overlooks the canyon and affords excellent views of the water cascading over the rocks below. The trail ascends to the top of a small bluff overlooking the creek and then meanders through an upland forest.
After a couple of stream crossings you'll hear and then see a very scenic little waterfall, three or four feet high (pictured below).
Getting There: From the intersection of Highways 41 and 28, just north of Williamsport, head west on 41. In less than a mile, the road will curve to the right. Less than a mile further on, just past an electrical substation, a small unpaved road (Potholes Road) veers off 41 to the right. Follow Potholes Road for about a mile and a half to a small (five or six car) parking lot on the left hand side of the road. DeLorme 30:G6 GPS Coordinates: |
