Outdoors: Culp Nature Preserve

Trail Click to Enlarge Wetland Click to Enlarge Introduction Culp Nature Preserve protects a twenty acre woods thick with spring wildflowers. Trails There is a half-mile lollipop trail. You’ll head east from the parking area, passing seasonally wet areas, a large pond off to the south, and crossing a small stream. In early spring, trout lily, bloodroot, May apple and other wildflowers line the trail. Turn left at the junction and follow the trail as it makes a short, steep climb toward the back of the property. Near the end of the climb, the trail passes a large colony of puttyroot, an orchid whose large solitary leaf – green with white longitudinal veins – emerges in the fall and doesn’t die back until late in the spring, when the plant may (but probably won’t) bloom. Late May or early June are probably best for seeing the stalked blossoms. From there, the trail soon loops back to the entrance path. Facilities None. Directions View Larger Map Lagrange County.
