Outdoors: Charlestown State Park Charlestown State Park
Charlestown State Park is located in Clark County, about one mile east of Charlestown, in southern Indiana. Charlestown State Park is one of the newest members of the Indiana park system, having been established in 1996. The park encompasses about 2,300 acres, all of which used to be part of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. The principal feature of the park is Fourteenmile Creek and the valley which the creek created over many thousands of years. The Park is also bordered by the Ohio River, though none of the existing trail system will take you to that mighty waterway. As a new park, Charlestown does not yet have much in the way of the kinds of facilities ordinarily found in other Indiana State Parks. For some, the relative quiet and lack of crowds will be an important advantage. There is a picnic area, a couple of shelter houses, and three loop trails. Two of these trails (#1 and #3) travel down into the valley of Fourteenmile Creek, and follow the creek for some distance. The elevation change on these trails is large by Indiana standards, and both are classified by the IDNR as "rugged". Trails 1 and 3 are 2.2 and 1.8 miles long, respectively. Trail two is a "moderate" one-mile loop which begins and ends at the shelter houses. Campsites were scheduled to be constructed sometime in 1997. Scenic Charlestown State Park has plenty of potential to become another jewel in the Indiana State Park system, and is worth visiting periodically to see how it is coming along. How to get there: From Charlestown, follow IN 62 east for about one mile. The entrance to the park will be on the right. Contact Information: Charlestown State Park P.O.
