    Outdoors: Charlestown State Park

rock formations along fourteen mile creek in charlestown state park Charlestown State Park is located in Clark County, about one mile east of Charlestown, in southern Indiana. Charlestown State Park is one of the newest members of the Indiana park system, having been established in 1996.

The park encompasses about 2,300 acres, all of which used to be part of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. The principal feature of the park is Fourteenmile Creek and the valley which the creek created over many thousands of years. The park also includes some frontage along the Ohio River.

My visits have revealed a park that doesn't receive the crowds of some of our more popular parks. For some, the relative quiet and lack of crowds will be an important advantage.

There are five trails, a campground, picnic area, and shelter houses. Most of the trails either descend into or explore the rim of the valley of Fourteenmile Creek. Some of them boast elevation changes that are substantial, at least by Indiana standards.

How to get there:

From Charlestown, follow IN 62 east for about one mile. The entrance to the park will be on the right.
