Introduction

Buzzard Roost has a short out-and-back trail along a high bluff to the north of the parking area that overlooks the Ohio River, offering tree-obscured views of the valley below. To the south, another trail descends quite steeply across rocky terrain to the river bank; the presence of a memorial marker along the trail suggests the need to be especially careful.

On the way down to the Ohio, you’ll pass rocky outcrops and a scenic creek bed before reaching some park benches and exuberant stands of poison ivy. From here, it’s only a few feet down to the river bank.

An 1865 steamboat explosion near the town of Magnet, just downstream of here, killed Union prisoners of war returning to their Ohio homes.
