Tyson Methodist Temple, Versailles Indiana
|
Tyson Methodist Temple, 1937. One of the most striking buildings in Indiana, and this photo doesn't really do it justice. The church was a gift of James Tyson, who earned his wealth as part of the Walgreens drugstore empire during the early 20th Century. The building cost $150,000 to erect, and was dedicated on 16 May 1937. According to Indiana: A New Historical Guide, the exterior is of ivory brick and glass brick, with a lead-coated copper roof. The spire is 65 feet tall, topped with an aluminum cross. The ceiling is said to be painted blue, with stars sprinkled across in "astronomically-correct" positions. The church is located at 324 West Tyson Street, at the intersection of West Tyson and South Adams Streets, in Versailles. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
