    Counties: Washington County Indiana


Washington County is located in southern Indiana, bordered on the northwest by Lawrence County, to the north by Jackson County, to the east by Clark and Scott counties, to the south by Crawford, Floyd and Harrison counties, and to the west by Orange County.

It has an area of 514 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 27,223 residents.

Salem (2000 Census population of 6,172) is both the largest city in Washington County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include New Pekin (1,334), Campbellsburg (578), Hardinsburg (244), Little York (185), Livonia (112), Saltillo (107), and Fredericksburg (92).

The county was named for George Washington, first President of the United States.
