    Counties: Vigo County Indiana


Vigo County is located in western Indiana, bordered on the north by Vermillion and Parke counties, to the east by Clay County, to the south by Sullivan County, and to the west by Illinois.

It has an area of 403 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 105,848 residents.

Terre Haute (2000 Census population of 59,614) is both the largest city in Vigo County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include West Terre Haute (2,330) and Seelyville (1,182).

The county was named for Francis Vigo, who played an important role in the area during and after the Revolutionary War.

Notable natives include the writer Theodore Dreiser, Socialist Presidential candidate Eugene Debs, Evan Bayh, U.S. Senator and 46th Governor of Indiana, baseball pitcher Thomas "Tommy" John, and Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas.
