    Counties: Vanderburgh County Indiana


Vanderburgh County is located in southwestern Indiana, bordered on the north by Gibson County, to the east by Warrick County, to the south by Kentucky, and to the west by Posey County.

It has an area of 235 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 171,922 residents.

Evansville (2000 Census population of 121,582) is both the largest city in Vanderburgh County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Darmstadt (1,313).

The county was named for Henry Vanderburgh, the first judge in the Indiana Territory.

Notable natives include football star Bob Griese, baseball player Don Mattingly, jazz drummer Sidney Catlett, and actor Avery Brooks.
