    Counties: St Joseph County Indiana


St Joseph County is located in north central Indiana, bordered on the north by Michigan, on the by Elkhart County, to the south by Marshall County, to the southwest by Starke County, and to the west by LaPorte County.

It has an area of 457 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 265,559 residents.

South Bend (2000 Census population of 107,789) is both the largest city in St Joseph County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Mishawaka (46,557), Granger (28,284), Walkerton (2,274), Osceola (1,859), Roseland (1,809) and New Carlisle (1,505).

The county was named for the St Joseph River, which drains about a third of the county.

Notable natives include the actors Chad Everett and Charles Butterworth, former House Majority Whip John Brademas, and Harold Urey, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.
