Ripley County is located in southeastern Indiana, bordered on the northwest by Decatur County, to the north by Franklin County, to the east by Dearborn County, to the southeast by Ohio and Switzerland counties, to the south by Jefferson County, and to the west by Jennings County.
It has an area of 446 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 26,523 residents.
Batesville (2000 Census population of 6,033) is the largest city in Ripley County; Versailles (1,784) is the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Milan (1,816), Osgood (1,669), Sunman (805), Holton (407), and Napoleon (238).
The county was named for Eleazer Ripley, who was a general in the War of 1812.
