    Counties: Porter County Indiana


Porter County is located in northwest Indiana, bordered on the north by Lake Michigan, to the east by LaPorte County, to the south by Jasper County, and to the west by Lake County.

It has an area of 418 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 146,798 residents.

Portage (2000 Census population of 33,496) is the largest city in Porter County; Valparaiso (27,428) is the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Chesterton (10,488), Porter (4,972), Hebron (3,596), Kouts (1,698), Ogden Dunes (1,313), Burns Harbor (766), Beverly Shores (708), and Dune Acres (213).

The county was named for David Porter, a Navy Commodore during the War of 1812.

Notable natives include popcorn entrepreneur Orville Redenbacher.
