Location: Northwest Indiana, bordered on the north by Lake Michigan, to the east by LaPorte County, to the south by Jasper County, and to the west by Lake County.

Population: 146,798 (2000 Census)

Topography: Generally level to gently sloping. The County drains to Lake Michigan and the Kankakee River. Pre-settlement vegetation was a combination of deciduous forest and prairie.
