    Counties: Owen County Indiana


Owen County is located in southwestern central Indiana, bordered on the north by Putnam County, to the east by Monroe and Morgan counties, to the south by Greene County, and to the west by Clay County.

It has an area of 385 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 26,556 residents.

Spencer (2000 Census population of 2,508) is both the largest city in Owen County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Gosport (715).

The county was named for Abraham Owen, who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Notable natives include the painter T.C. Steele, who was born in the Gosport area.
