Morgan County is in the central part of Indiana. The county was formed in 1821 by act of the state legislature and named for Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan. It has a population of 55,920 (1990 Census) and an area of approximately 406 square miles. Martinsville (11,677) is the county seat. Other cities in Morgan County include Mooresville (5,541), and Brooklyn (1,162). Martinsville is still sometimes referred to as the "Artesian City", a reference to its past as a site of mineral springs and sanitariums. The town is also home to the world's largest goldfish hatchery and the annual Fall Foliage Festival. The topography of the county is varied, ranging from the nearly level northern part to the hilly southern areas, part of which are included in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Prior to European settlement, vegetation in the county was mainly deciduous forests.Government: Business: Education: Health: Culture: Entertainment: Media: Outdoors: Other: |
