Monroe County is located in south central Indiana, bordered on the north by Morgan County, to the east by Brown County, to the southeast by Jackson County, to the south by Lawrence County, and to the west by Greene and Owen counties.
It has an area of 394 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 120,563 residents.
Bloomington (2000 Census population of 69,291) is both the largest city in Monroe County and the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Ellettsville (5,078) and Stinesville (194).
The county was named for James Monroe, 5th President of the United States.
Notable natives include composer Hoagy Carmichael, writer Ross Lockridge, screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, and violinist Joshua Bell.
