Marion County is located in central Indiana, bordered on the north by Hamilton County, to the east by Hancock County, to the southeast by Shelby County, to the south by Johnson County, to the southwest by Morgan County, to the west by Hendricks County, and to the northwest by Boone County.
It has an area of 396 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 860,454 residents.
Indianapolis (2000 Census population of 781,870) is both the largest city in Marion County and Indiana, and also serves as the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Lawrence (38,915), Beech Grove (14,880), Speedway (12,881), Cumberland (5,500), Southport (1,852), Meridian Hills (1,713), Warren Park (1,656), Clermont (1,477), Homecroft (751), Rocky Ripple (712), Williams Creek (413), Wynnedale (275), Spring Hill (97), Crows Nest (96), and North Crows Nest (42).
The county was named for Revolutionary War General Francis Marion.
Among the many notable natives are physics Nobel Laureate Philip Anderson, gangster John Dillinger, entertainer David Letterman, basketball star George McGinnis, actor Steve McQueen, musicians Wes Montgomery, Kenneth (Babyface) Edmonds and J. J. Johnson, writers Booth Tarkington and Kurt Vonnegut and cyclist Marshall (Major) Taylor.
