Madison County is located in central Indiana, bordered on the north by Grant County, to the east by Delaware and Henry counties, to the south by Hancock County, and to the west by Hamilton and Tipton counties.
It has an area of 452 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 130,669 residents.
Anderson (2000 Census population of 59,734) is both the largest city in Madison County and the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Elwood (9,737), Alexandria (6,260), Pendleton (3,873), Chesterfield (2,969), Edgewood (1,988), Frankton (1,905), Lapel (1,855), Ingalls (1,168), Summitville (1,090), Markleville (383), and Orestes (334).
The county was named for U.S. President James Madison.
Notable natives include baseball pticher Carl Erskine and Republican Presidential candidate Wendel Willkie.
