    Counties: Lawrence County Indiana


Lawrence County is located in south central Indiana, bordered on the north by Monroe County, to the east by Jackson County, to the southeast by Washington County, to the south by Orange County, and to the west by Greene and Martin counties.

It has an area of 449 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 45,922 residents.

Bedford (2000 Census population of 13,768) is both the largest city in Lawrence County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Mitchell (4,567) and Oolitic (1,152).

The county was named for Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812, known for his dying words - "Don't give up the ship".

Notable natives include astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom.
