Location: South central Indiana, bordered on the north by Monroe County, to the east by Jackson County, to the southeast by Washington County, to the south by Orange County, and to the west by Greene and Martin counties.

Population: 45,922 (2000 Census)

Cities & Towns: Bedford (county seat, 13,768, 58th largest city in the State); Mitchell (4,567), Oolitic (1,152)

Named For: Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812, known for his dying words - "Don't give up the ship".
