LaPorte County is located in northwest Indiana, bordered on the north by Michigan and Lake Michigan, to the east by St Joseph County, to the south by Starke County, and to the west by Porter County.
It has an area of 598 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 110,106 residents.
Michigan City (2000 Census population of 32,900) is the largest city in LaPorte County. LaPorte (21,621) is the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Trail Creek (2,296), Westville (2,116), Long Beach (1,559), Kingsford Heights (1,453), Wanatah (1,013), La Crosse (561), Michiana Shores (330), and Kingsbury (229).
The county's name is French for "The Door", a reference to a trading route.
Notable natives include the actress Anne Baxter, baseball pitcher Don Larsen, and Harold Handley, the 40th Governor of Indiana.
