Johnson County is in the central part of Indiana. It has a population of 88,109 (1990 Census) and an area of approximately 315 square miles. The county is rectangular and extends 20 miles from north to south and 16 miles from east to west. Franklin (12,907) is the county seat and home of Franklin College. Other cities in Johnson County include Greenwood (26,265), Whiteland (2,446), and Bargersville (1,681). Johnson County's location just south of Indianapolis has made it a focus of suburban development; as a result, the county is one of the fastest growing in the state. Prior to European settlement, vegetation in the county was mainly deciduous forests. |
