    Counties: Hancock County Indiana


Hancock County is located in central Indiana, bordered on the north by Madison County, to the east by Henry County, to the southeast by Rush County, to the south by Shelby County, and to the west by Marion County.

It has an area of 306 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 55,391 residents.

Greenfield (2000 Census population of 14,600) is both the largest city in Hancock County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Fortville (3,444), New Palestine (1,264), McCordsville (1,134), Wilkinson (356), and Spring Lake (262).

The county was named for John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Notable natives include the poet James Whitcomb Riley and World War I flying ace Harvey Weir Cook.
