Franklin County is located in southeastern Indiana, bordered on the north by Fayette and Union counties, to the east by Ohio, to the south by Dearborn and Ripley counties, and to the west by Decatur and Rush counties..

It has an area of 386 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 22,151 residents.

Brookville (2000 Census population of 2,652) is both the largest city in Franklin County and the County Seat.

Other cities and towns include Oldenburg (647), Laurel (579), and Cedar Grove (185).

The county was named for Benjamin Franklin.

Notable natives include cannery entrepreneur Gilbert van Camp and Civil War General and author (Ben Hur) Lew Wallace.
