Clay County is located in western Indiana, bordered on the north by Parke County, to the east by Owen and Putnam counties, to the south by Greene County, and to the west by Sullivan and Vigo counties.
It has an area of 358 square miles and during the 2000 Census had 25,556 residents.
Brazil (2000 Census population of 8,188) is both the largest city in Clay County and the County Seat.
Other cities and towns include Clay City (1,019), Knightsville (624), Harmony (589), Staunton (550), Carbon (334), and Center Point (292).
The county was named for Henry Clay.
Notable natives include labor leader Jimmy Hoffa and George Craig, 39th Governor of Indiana.
