Cities: Valparaiso Valparaiso Valparaiso (2000 Population = 27,428, 30th largest city in the State) is the county seat of Porter County. The city is named for seaport in the South American country of Chile, though it was originally named Portersville. A post office opened in 1836. Manufacturing is important in the local economy; the city is also home to Valparaiso University.
