Cities: South Bend South Bend
South Bend Indiana (2000 population = 107,789) is the fourth-largest city in the State. It lies in, and is the seat of, St. Joseph County, in the far north-central part of Indiana. South Bend is noted as the former home of the Studebaker automobile manufacturing company. Vehicle manufacturing is still an important part of the local economy - AM General assembles military vehicles and the Hummer line locally, and Honeywell fabricates aircraft landing and braking systems. However, the most notable resident of South Bend is Notre Dame University, famed for the quality of its educational offerings and the performance and history of its football team. Famous persons born in South Bend include the actors Charles Butterworth and Chad Everett. |
