Cities: Oxford Oxford
Oxford Indiana (population 1,271, 2000 Census) is the former seat of Benton County. Oxford was the first town and seat of the county, being platted in 1843. Following condemnation of the county courthouse in 1873, the seat of local government moved to Fowler, where it remains. The park-like original courthouse square still sits smack in the center of Oxford, with a fair selection of historic buildings ringing it. The overall effect is of a sleepy but picturesque town, the sort of place you might expect to find a small college. These days, Oxford is probably best known as the birthplace of Dan Patch, a famous race horse. Dan Patch was foaled in 1896 and never lost a race. The barn were Dan Patch was born still exists and is quite visible in town. Its roof is emblazoned with the phrase "Home of Dan Patch 1:55", the 1:55 being a reference to the horse's record-setting time for a mile race. Oxford lies in the southeastern quadrant of Benton County, in Oak Grove Township. State Highways 55 and 352 intersect in town. There is also a railroad that runs east-west through the settlement. Oxford celebrates Dan Patch Days every summer. For more information, see the Dan Patch Days website. |
