Morocco

Morocco Indiana (2000 population = 1,127) is located in Beaver Township, in western Newton County. The town was platted in 1851, and a branch line of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad was built through the settlement in 1888. Morocco has seen more prosperous days, but it has a couple of claims to fame. Edgar "Sam" Rice was born near here in 1890, and went on to a distinguished career in baseball, culminating in his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Morocco is also known as the gateway to the Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area, just north and west of town. Willow Slough is regionally famous as a mecca for hunters and birders. Morocco is located just west of the intersection of Indiana highway 114 and US Highway 41.
