Cities: Anderson Anderson Anderson (2000 Population = 59,734, ninth largest city in the State) is located near the center of Madison County, about 40 miles northeast of Indianapolis. It serves as the seat of Madison County. Originally known as Anderstontown, the city was platted in 1823, but it is located on the site of a Delaware Indian village with much earlier origins. The discovery of natural gas deposits in the area during the late 1870s led to rapid industrial development, and the city went on to become a major producer of products for the automotive industry. A major local attraction is Mounds State Park, which preserves several Native American burial mounds. It is also the location of Hoosier Park, a horse-racing facility. Official Web Site |
