1851 - Indiana Constitution approved by electorate
1855 - First classes held at Butler University
1877 - Indiana's 14th Governor, Oliver Perry, dies in Indianapolis
1945 - Frank Sinatra performs for free at Gary's Memorial Auditorium. Many of the 5,800 fans on hand are school children involved in a walkout staged over racial integration. Sinatra's remarks during the concert are credited with helping Gary end the strike and move towards integrated classrooms.
1988 - National Institute for Fitness and Sport opens, Indianapolis
